Dumaguete wins Sinulog Fireworks Competition

DSS Fireworks of Dumaguete emerged as the grand prize winner during the 3rd Sinulog Fireworks Competition in SM City Cebu on the eve of the Sinulog Grand Parade.

Eight teams from all over the country gathered in one venue to showcase their fireworks.

DSS Fireworks brought home P125,000, while the 2nd prize winner, Sky Glitters from Manila received P100,000. St. Michael from Bulacan bagged the 3rd place with P80,000 cash.

ABS-CBN lead actors perform at Waterfront Cebu Saturday

SEVERAL ABS-CBN male lead actors are doing a show at 7 p.m. this Saturday, January 15, 2011, at a hotel in Cebu, Philippines.

The Kapamilya leading men who are performing at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City this Sinulog 2011 are Gerald Anderson, Enchong Dee, Sam Milby, Piolo Pascual, John Lloyd Cruz, Jake Cuenca, and Zanjoe Marudo.

Joining them is special guest Pokwang.

Tickets to the show are priced as follows: VIP, P2,500; Premium, P2,000; De Luxe, P1,000; Patron, P800; and Balcony, P600.

SM to host 3rd Sinulog Fireworks Competition

For three consecutive years, SM City Cebu will once again host one of the highlights of Sinulog 2011–the 3rd Sinulog Fireworks Competition which will happen on Jan. 15 starting at 8 p.m. fronting the Northwing.

Eight contestants from all over the country will compete during the fireworks competition. Grand champion will win P120,000.

In 2009, DSS Fireworks from Dumaguete City was chosen as the champion, while Pyrohaven from Bulacan emerged as the champion in last year’s fireworks competition.

A million people show up for Sinulog solemn procession

Thousands of devotees carrying Sto. Niño images in various shapes and sizes attended the solemn procession that preceded the grand parade during Cebu’s celebration of the Sinulog Festival last January 19 and 20.

The two events are among the three highlights of the month-long Sinulog celebration in Cebu City in January. One other is the fluvial procession, also held on Saturday but at dawn.

The rains did not stop people from attending the procession that started at 1 p.m. At the start of the line were altar boys and priests, Knights of Columbus members, and a group of physically handicapped individuals. Continue reading

Unique, skillful performances win top spots

Going into the specifics of the Sto. Niño’s role in the everyday Cebuano life earned for Barangay Labangon the top prize in Sunday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan secondary division.

Lively dance steps and an engaging and skillful performance did the same for Barangay Mabolo in the elementary level of the same competition.

Labangon’s presentation featured a wedding with the newlyweds releasing doves in keeping with tradition and accompanied by their retinue of relatives that included a crying grandmother.

Labangon Sinulog winners A celebration of union and family tradition, with the Sto. Niño as guide, earned Labangon the high school division top prize in Sunday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan.

The couple opened a gift box that contained an image of the Sto. Niño whom they worshipped and paid tribute to from then on. The Sto. Niño blessed the couple and it continues to play a central role in the couple’s lives including in the baptism of their first child.

Labangon, whose dancers wore Filipinia costumes and did the traditional Sinulog steps, was also picked Best in Costume. The women in the dance alternately carried hoops of red flowers and bunches of yellow ones while the men held Spanish lamplights on pillars.
