Unique, skillful performances win top spots

Going into the specifics of the Sto. Niño’s role in the everyday Cebuano life earned for Barangay Labangon the top prize in Sunday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan secondary division.

Lively dance steps and an engaging and skillful performance did the same for Barangay Mabolo in the elementary level of the same competition.

Labangon’s presentation featured a wedding with the newlyweds releasing doves in keeping with tradition and accompanied by their retinue of relatives that included a crying grandmother.

Labangon Sinulog winners A celebration of union and family tradition, with the Sto. Niño as guide, earned Labangon the high school division top prize in Sunday’s Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan.

The couple opened a gift box that contained an image of the Sto. Niño whom they worshipped and paid tribute to from then on. The Sto. Niño blessed the couple and it continues to play a central role in the couple’s lives including in the baptism of their first child.

Labangon, whose dancers wore Filipinia costumes and did the traditional Sinulog steps, was also picked Best in Costume. The women in the dance alternately carried hoops of red flowers and bunches of yellow ones while the men held Spanish lamplights on pillars.

Sinulog street stalls sell native bags, accessories

ONE interesting fixture every Sinulog celebration in Cebu City is the appearance of stalls fronting the Abellana National School on Osmeña Boulevard.

Native and knitted bags and clothes and shell and wooden accessories from as far as Baguio, Zamboanga, and Davao are sold in the makeshift display tents.

A few stalls also carry shoes, sandals, and slippers–some from the well-known shoe-making city of Carcar south of Cebu City.

Suroy-Suroy to Cebu’s northern towns

Local cuisine and cultural dances were top fares in the Suroy-Suroy Sugbo Northern Escapade, a tour of 15 of Cebu’s northern towns that ran from August 30 to September 1, 2007.

At every stop were tables bursting with native food like lechon–the local term for roasted pork, “puto” paired with mango, “budbod” in its many forms, seafood that Cebu’s coastal areas are well known for, and other edible delights indigenous to the towns like Catmon’s budbod kabug and coconut balls, Liloan’s masi, Medellin’s “bokayo,” Bantayan’s famous “buwad” or dried fish.

In the area of entertainment, town mayors tried to outdo each in pleasing Suroy participants. Many had students or residents lining up along roadsides and waving flags to welcome the tour convoy of 3 Ceres buses, coaster, and over five other smaller vehicles that carried the 230 Suroy participants. They prepared cultural and other dances, which were performed by selected students or residents of the towns, and put up booths displaying local products that were a big hit with the guests.

On top of the list of places to stay of many regular Cebu City visitors is Elicon House, a pension house located in the heart of the mid-town area.

Elicon House is located on P. del Rosario St., just a few meters away from the University of San Carlos and the Sto. Rosario Parish. The pension house is already a fixture in Cebu City, having been established in 1972. It’s a favorite of frequent Cebu visitors and backpackers.

When a scheduled nine-hour brownout in Lapu-Lapu City threatened to spoil my family’s Saturday night, we decided to stay in a Cebu City pension house for the weekend. Elicon House was the first name that came to our mind. It’s an affordable pension house that provides great service, clean rooms, and a secured stay for visitors.

We took the Metro Double room, which costs just P1,120. The room has two beds and each bed has a retractable cot under it in case you’d need more sleeping space.

Elicon House has 50 guest rooms and underwent an extensive renovation in 2006.

Its rooms and toilets are clean. It doesn’t have a bathtub, though. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with cable TVs.
